Who are the Freelancers?
By definition, a "Freelancer" is a self-employed individual that provides services in a certain project and not tied up to a particular employer in a long-term basis (contract base). They are often regarded to as "Independent Contractor" for tax and employment classification. They are often seen in creative field industries like writing, music, graphic design, event management, web publishing, video production, computer programming, travel guide and the like.
In other words, they sell their services (creative and technical skill set) to highest client-bidder/s for a specific period of time. Yes, they can have multiple clients at the same time. They can work part-time or full-time and in any forms that they want as long as they get the work done as requested by their client/s. It's like managing your own business and your skills are your products and services offered. They can accept or decline projects and clients on their most available time. Like any other field of work, there are pros and cons of being a freelancer and it all depends on your personality and attitude to work.
Some freelancers are represented by agencies that resells the previous' services to potential clients. But nowadays, there are multiple freelance online platforms that offer a huge number of freelancers that clients can choose from and vice versa. Imagine an online store of professional freelancers, promising projects and wide variety of clients. The possibility is endless!
